This guide will cover everything you need to know to successfully sign up for an ETHGlobal Hackathon. We will guide you through the process of where and how to sign up, which information you will be required to provide, staking, reimbursements, etc.
⌛ TL:DR
Below you will find a video guiding you through all the application steps for our hackathons!
Step 1: Finding the event you want to apply for
The first step in signing up for an ETHGlobal Hackathon is to find the event you want to apply for. You can find a list of upcoming events on the ETHGlobal website or by following our social media accounts. Once you have identified the event you want to attend, you can proceed to the next step of the sign-up process.
The full list of events for the year can be found here:
Keep in mind some of our events happen Online. This means you could participate from anywhere in the world without physically attending. On the other hand, for our in person hackathons such as the one that just finished in Tokyo, we require our participants to be physically present. PS. It’s great fun 🙂
Step 2: Pick your role!
After you’ve chosen the event you would like to participate in, click “Apply to attend” and you will be given the option to choose which role you would like to take on. During our hackathons we offer various roles, of course the main one being a “Hacker”. However, we also encourage individuals to become speakers and host talk / workshops / panels to make the hackathon more intriguing and interesting with your input. Or mentors who draw upon their own technical expertise and experience in guiding hackers through the hackathon.
Just remember, you don’t necessarily have to be a hacker to apply to an ETHGlobal Hackathon! But you should have building experience! And we don’t offer a general “attendee” ticket.
Step 3: Fill in your information
Assuming you have chosen the “Hacker” role you will then be redirected to a form. This form needs to be filled out with all relevant information. This form includes things such as “Which country you are applying from”, whether you are a student or not but also information regarding your social channels (if you are comfortable sharing them) so that we could then mention you in our posts if necessary.
Feel free to fill in all the details even if you are unsure whether you would 100% be able to fly-out or participate. Pay extra close attention to your GitHub, CV/resume, your background and what you want to develop at the event! We are looking for your ability to code, build and design! Filling out the application does not bind you to come. We will simply review everything and send you more information via email. Keep in mind our in person events are limited by venue capacity so the earlier you apply and submit, the better your chances of attending are!
Step 4: Staking, but just to verify! It is reimbursed.
You will need to stake a small amount of ETH in order to verify yourself. Don’t worry, once you have attended and submitted a project, this amount will be fully recovered and sent back to you.
Once the event has ended and you have submitted a project, we will return all staked funds. This process is usually done in batches and takes approximately two weeks. In case you have applied and staked but then something comes up and you cannot attend, simply e-mail us at hello@ethglobal.com and we will take care of refunding you regardless of your participation.
Step 5: Don’t be afraid
Don’t be afraid to apply, even if you are alone or in a team. There are many opportunities to meet new people, such as the hacker café, the hackathon itself, Discord groups, etc. Additionally, don’t worry about your skill level. Even if you are a Web2 developer who only knows how to code in Python or R, our goal is to provide a comfortable environment for you to explore your skills and build your dream projects.
Attending a hackathon can seem intimidating at first, especially if you are new to the field or don’t have much experience. However, our events are designed to be welcoming to everyone, regardless of their background or skill level. Whether you are an experienced developer or just starting out, you will find a supportive community of like-minded individuals who are passionate about technology and innovation.
We also offer a range of resources and support to help you succeed. Our tech mentors are on hand to provide guidance and support, and our onboarding sessions are designed to help you get up to speed quickly. We also offer a variety of workshops, talks, and panels covering a wide range of topics, so you can learn new skills and explore new ideas.
So if you are thinking about attending an ETHGlobal Hackathon, don’t be afraid and don’t hold back. We are here to support you every step of the way, and we can’t wait to see what you will create. 🎉
