For three days in May, we brought the Ethereum community together online to envision a decentralized future. Alongside our friends at Protocol Labs, we set out to build a platform for web2 developers to experiment with web3 technology. Teams from around the world got a chance to test their brightest ideas, and industry leaders shared their thoughts on where the space is headed.

The weekend, by the numbers:

🌈 94 Web3-focused projects

🎙 16 Talks & workshops

🌟 12 Finalists

👩🏼 281 Hackathon participants

📺 526 Summit attendees

Though this event only lasted three days, the hacks did not disappoint. Our 12 finalists were selected from a pool of close to one hundred projects, while others were selected to win bounty prizes awarded by our sponsors. These teams built new-to-world ideas that challenged the status quo, and presented a window to the future of our ecosystem.

The Web3 Weekend Finalists:

💱ZeroFee Exchange

ZeroFee Exchange allows you to create limit orders without trade fees on the Uniswap Protocol while making money at the same time!

The team: @smsunarto + @tweetsbykatz

Why we loved it: ZeroFee Exchange more obviously helps avoid fees, and reduces price impact for larger DEX trades, but the real value is that it provides better UI to a somewhat hidden Uniswap V3 feature

⛓️Cross Chain Wallet Dashboard

This projects helps you to keep track of your liquidity across chains.

The team: @maxklenk + @philippzentner

What caught our eye: As we go to L2s, we need dashboards and analysis tools that take into account liquidity across chains. Cross Chain Wallet dashboard does just that, adding simplicity to the process.

🧪Open Science (Opsci) Data Wallet

Data management with the Opsci Data Wallet flips the data economy on its head and gives data sovereignty back to the creators — research participants — and empowers researchers with tools for interoperability, sharing, and reproducible workflows.

The team: @XandraMcC + @shamburgularara + @kashyap_kinshuk + @hebbianloop

Why it matters: By creating interoperability across previously siloed data, Opsci Data Wallet positively impacts efficiency, security, and boosts collaboration. The tech stack for publicly shareable and verifiable data is getting more and more mature, to the point that projects like these, which attempt solving such large-scale problems are viable to build over a weekend.

💥NFT-ME

Bringing quality and auditability to real world or digital assets all tied to an NFT.

The team: @borwahs

Why it’s important: Supply chains are logistical nightmares with increasingly higher stakes (see: EverGiven) NFTs are a great foundation to begin tagging supply chain processes in order to increase process visibility. This project is a step in the direction to better supply chain visibility using NFTs

🔊The Ultra Sound Music Project

Every revolution needs its sound track. The sound track to the ultra sound money revolution is ultra sound music! Blockchain native music legos , composable and scarce!

The team: @CameronTMorris + @vijatsu

Why it’s cool: A creative use of public key data encoded as music, rethinking the possibilities with NFT’s and generative art. This project was a unique take on the idea ownership and collaboration, and really stood out to us.

MeMeta

A digital land aggregation tool, with analytical insights at its core.

The team: @ali_vira + @winstonarobson + @brennan_eth + @Elocremarc + @mathesondavid

Why it’s important: This project allows users to easily access and analyze digital land ownership in the burgeoning metaverse. As digital land becomes more and more sought after, systems like this one will be ever more important in onboarding users.

🗣️The Convo Space

The Decentralized Conversation Layer of Internet, customizable plugins for apps connecting conversations and communities across the Internet.

The team: @anuditnagar

Why it matters: This project works to decentralize online communications, while also providing tools for digital identity erasure. Security and efficiency are key values brought by decentralized tech, this project makes great use of that ethos, and establishes a critical “communication layer” for web3 interactions.

📺DBS-Decentralized Broadcast & Stream

Integrating Live Stream for Audius music Creators- Decentralized Broadcaster Streamer

The team: @RushiKardile + @VinayS789

Why it matters: Creates totally decentralized streaming/revenue opportunities for digital creators by employing a unique build of Audius, Unlock, and Livepeer systems. This was truly an impressive project to come out of a three-day hackathon.

🎨ArtVaults

Decentralized Storage for exclusive NFT content. Securely store all assets for a digital artwork in a vault. Freeze your art piece, upload the assets to Filecoin Decentralized storage and register an NFT on the Ethereum Blockchain.

The team: @tdotchardin

Why it’s cool: This project solves the issues of centralized storage associated with NFTs while creating new ways to store and batch files. It’s a unique and impressive take on a common issue facing NFT ownership today.

🖼️YouTube NFT Drop

Create NFTs and gift them to your early Youtube Subscribers so they can flex, promote you and create a stronger bond

The team: @GalloDaSballo + @dylangolow

Why it’s cool: A new way to incentivize audience participation and community growth through NFT drops, and an equally new way of thinking about NFT usage and production. Projects like this one will help expand the working relationship between creators and decentralized solutions by forming new incentive structures.

🏭NFT Factory Factory

A factory that creates a minting contract for generative art NFTs

The team: @bgok

Why it matters: This hack explores the possibilities of uniqueness through randomly generated NFTs, and builds on the momentum of the NFT space to create something that would help it scale to new users

⚒️Canva NFT Minter

Canva NFT Minter allows the Canva users to publish their designs as NFT using the custom Canva Publish app

The team: @ivirajanchan

Why it matters: This project makes NFTs more accessible by utilizing more widely adopted online software as an on-ramp for creators. As decentralized tech becomes more user friendly, projects like this one will help new-to-crypto users experience the benefits more easily.

Web3 Weekend was a celebration of progress

Thanks to our wonderful sponsors and talented speakers, Web3 Weekend packed a ton of useful information into three short days. Each and every participant brought inspirational energy that kept spirits high throughout the event. Hot topics from NFTs, to decentralized audio/video solutions, and smart contracts made for excellent discussion. Here are some highlights from the summits and talks:

zoom webinar with four guests
Amy Jung, Billy Rennekamp, Molly Mackinlay, and pplpleasr during the Why Web3

The Why Web3 Summit featured some of the brightest minds in the crypto space. Our ecosystem is constantly evolving, and conversations like these drive both adoption and advancement. Seeing the mixture of creatives and developers happen in real time is one of the distinct successes of our events, as the merge of these forces will shape what’s to come.

Through these summits, we’ve recorded a wealth of information for new crypto enthusiasts and experts alike to keep pace with the rapid growth of the Ethereum space. Be sure to check out some of the other incredible moments on our Youtube page, and visit the Showcase to see how our hackers experimented with this technology.

Web3 Weekend would not be possible without the support of our partners and sponsors

Web3 Weekend was successful on a number of fronts. But we owe a large part of that success to the generous support of Protocol Labs & our sponsor community. It truly takes a village to create the experiences that we look to give to our hackers and participants. These partnerships make it possible to provide these events for free, and directly contribute to the growth of our space.

We’re lucky to be able to work with some of the greatest teams in the industry. Our shared community vision is energized by the work our sponsors do to assist our hackers throughout the events. Not only do these partnerships support the creation of our events, they form the backbone of support that assists hackers of all skill levels as they work on their new ideas.

We are truly thankful for the work of our team of tech mentors, judges, and support staff that helps us deliver the high quality experiences we are known for. Our mission has always been focused on building the ecosystem one developer at a time. We encourage hackers to continue their projects after our events, and will work to connect them with relevant grants and accelerators to build momentum for their ideas. No project is too small, if you believe in it, so do we.

That’s all folks!

With Web3 Weekend coming to a close, we’re looking forward to our next event, HackMoney 2021. This fully-digital DeFi focused event will run from June 18th — July 9th, and will give you the support of a huge community of experts, mentors, sponsors, and other community members who want to help you hack the future of finance.

Applications are now open, and we’d love for you to join us. Follow us on twitter to stay in the know about future events, and we’ll look forward to seeing you soon!
